A Letter to Mr. Donald Trump

By Amanda Cohen on August 21, 2015

Dear Mr. Donald Trump,

I have so many questions for you … so many unanswered, yet valid questions. However, the one question on the top of my list is Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers’ famous question on Weekend Update …“REALLY?”

When I first heard that you were one of the Republican candidates for the upcoming presidential election, I laughed thinking that it was a joke. Unfortunately, it was not a joke, and all I had to say then and all I have to say now is “REALLY?”

Before your many public appearances and press conferences for the presidential elections, I thought that you were a billionaire businessman, television show host who, despite his age, continues to be a complete womanizer and misogynist. Even after your first Republican debate, all of these qualities still rang true, but another word came up in my mind that perfectly describes you: ignorant. I initially wanted to add stupidity into your list of qualities, however you clearly aren’t stupid in terms of the business world.

I have another question for you Mr. Trump, are you aware of the fact that we are living in the year 2015? I only ask because your racial and gender views seem to be taken out of the 1700s. Since you are a Republican candidate, I didn’t expect you to possess an open mind when dealing with race and gender issues, but your views are not conservative. Your opinions are so uneducated and disgusting that they do not even fit into this realm.

I first want to direct everyone’s attention to Trump’s full stance on Mexican immigrants.

“When Mexico (meaning the Mexican Government) sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you (pointing to the audience). They’re not sending you (pointing again). They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems to us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people! But I speak to border guards and they tell us what we’re getting. And it only makes common sense. They’re sending us not the right people. It’s coming from more than Mexico. It’s coming from all over South and Latin America, and it’s coming probably from the Middle East. But we don’t know. Because we have no protection and we have no competence, we don’t know what’s happening. And it’s got to stop and it’s got to stop fast.”

Mr. Trump, you are essentially blaming Mexican immigrants for rape in the United States, and I have one thing to say to you about that … WAKE UP! I don’t know what America you’re living in, but I’m living in the America where rape is present everywhere. I attend the University of Michigan; Michigan has 150,000 undocumented Mexican immigrants, but the statistics state that 56 percent of rapists are white, 42 percent of rapists are black, and 2 percent of rapists are a different race.

Why do you make these comments when the statistics are not there to support you? You’re a multimillionaire who owns a computer … look facts up before forming an opinion that makes you look like an idiot!

I honestly don’t know if I have more of an issue with you bashing hard-working Mexican immigrants, or if my issue is with the fact that your high opinion of yourself leads you to believe that all white, American men are model citizens. I guess you haven’t realized by now that bad people, just like good people, come in all shapes, sizes, genders, races, sexual orientations, and citizenship status.

Dr. Harold Shipman, a Methodist white man who came from a middle class home in England, was sentenced to life in prison at the age of 55. Shipman held one of the most respected professions in the world, but he STILL murdered his patients.

I wish I were able to stop the letter here, but I haven’t even gotten to your rage-inducing comments about women. Many of your comments are disgusting, but one comment in particular that really is bothersome is what you said about Megyn Kelly.

“You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her—wherever.”

I would like to come back to the question I posed at the very beginning of this letter … REALLY? Are you seriously making a period joke? If I hadn’t heard these words come out of your mouth I would have thought an 11-year-old boy said them. You’re 69 years old, you have been married three times, and you have two daughters. It amazes me that you would even think that making a period joke is appropriate.

It is very apparent that you have zero respect for women, but I don’t feel anger, I feel sad for your two daughters and three sons. Your daughters are living in a world where their own father does not appreciate the miraculous ability for women to give birth. Your sons are living in a world where their father, the man that they love and respect more than anyone in the world, is teaching them that women don’t deserve to be respected.

Look, Mr. Trump, you may have amassed a multi-million dollar empire, but us women are able to grow and care for a child. You make jokes about the monthly visitor women endure, but the joke’s on you because that monthly visitor is a part of women creating the future of the country that you love so much.

Mr. Trump, your part in the presidential election is both humorous and disgusting. Part of me wishes that you would just drop out of the race so I can stop hearing your ignorant remarks. The other part of me hopes that you remain in the race so that you can give Saturday Night Live some more comical material to work with.

Oh, if you end up reading this letter Mr. Trump, I want to assure you that my anger towards you is not due to PMS from a monthly menstrual cycle. My anger stems from—well, before I tell you, you might want to sit down because this information might make you collapse—the fact that I am a well-informed, open-minded American woman who is capable of forming an opinion on something.

Sincerely,

Amanda Cohen
