How An English Major Could Spend Their Summer

By Michael Rooney on May 2, 2016

The semester is winding down, the weather is getting warmer, and the English major is relieved to almost be finished writing essays and reading class assigned texts.

Yet, many English majors do not want to be done reading and writing. Chances are that they are in this program of study because those are two of the occupations they love. As a college student studying English myself, I am glad that I will soon be able to enjoy my hobbies with pleasure.

Here a few ways an English major could spend their summer.

Read whatever books desired.

For the entire school year, an English major has been required to read the texts on their syllabi. While it is nice to be able to read and all, they still don’t get to choose what they flip through (unless they could in a specific course). I’m not saying English majors judge books by their covers, because that is something we should all know. I’m saying that they aren’t able to select from a variety of books so that they can get an idea of what they think might fit their interests.

Summer vacation gives the English major the opportunity to take their time in both choosing what to read and actually reading. There is no pressure in having to finish a certain portion of the book by a set date and writing an essay on it.

Write for a social content platform.

Soon, the English major will not have to write any more essays for a few months. Again, I’m sure the English major likes writing and may not mind essays, but there are requirements for these assignments as well. By writing for a social content platform or a news source, the English major has the power to write about whatever they have on their mind.

But it only gets better. They will be able to actually have their voice heard by other people, which is something many people like to have happen to them. The only comments they would have to receive are those from the editors; other than that, the English major will be able to produce a final piece of writing written exclusively from their voice and shared to the world.

Get creative in writing.

As an English major, do you ever just sit there and daydream about this perfect creative idea that you have? It happens to me all the time. I could just be having lunch when I suddenly have this idea stuck in my head, and I can’t stop thinking about it. Well, summer vacation is the perfect time to whip up a piece of creative writing. Write a poem, a short story, a novel — anything you wish! Be proud of your thoughts and how they can translate into your own voice.

Yes, summer vacation is the time to relax, sleep, work, soak up the hot weather and have fun with friends. But in the case that an English major has extra time on their hands, reading and writing in their own styles is a great way to enjoy what they love.
